The Madagascar Giant Day Gecko was part of a series of three format drawing of geckos, along with the flying gecko and a tokay gecko. This was mislabeled as Phelsuma abotti abotti (pointed out by my friend Julie Bergman of Gecko Ranch!) After that it was changed to reflect the correct Latin name. This drawings was touched-up again 5.2009.
Madagascar Giant Day Gecko is found in the the tropical and subtropical rainforests in the northern and northwestern part of the island. It has also been introduced to areas of Florida and Hawaii. As the name implies, it is a large gecko that can reach lengths up to 12 inches or 30cm. They are most often found in the trees basking. Like most geckos they generally are nocturnal feeders. Their prey is usually flying insects, but will occasionally lick fruit for the sweet juice and plants to get pollen. They make popular pets.
