The Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion was completed on 10.11.2010. This was to replace an earlier drawing, done in a horizontal rather than vertical format. Scorpions are fun to draw, and their anatomy, like other invertebrates, lends itself well to the medium I use and the style of the illustration. The drawing is based on a photo by Vasiliy Loskutov, who owns this and other scorpion species.
The Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion lives in the the southwestern US and northern Mexico and is the largest scorpion in that area. They can grow to a length of over six inches long. It is native to the Sonoran and Mojave deserts. The scorpion is large enough that is can feed on prey as large as lizards and snakes. They are poisonous, but are not considered deadly to humans. Their sting is comparable to a bee's, but as with bees if the victim is allergic it can be fatal.
