The Giant Grouper was completed on 6.20.09. I've recently gotten into scuba diving, so my interest in animals I'll likely see has grown a good deal. We recently went to the California Academy of Sciences and saw the Giant Sea Bass (which I'll be drawing shortly) and it inspired me to create an illustration of a large saltwater fish. I picked the Giant Grouper.
The Giant Grouper -also called a Jewfish or Goliath Grouper - are the largest member of the sea bass family. They are found in tropical waters usually near reefs or other structures. Groupers are often caught for food and in many areas are now protected. They are extremely large and can live for many decades. For reasons not completely understood, however, in some areas of Florida the population has dramatically increased and they are considered pests by some.
