Artist's notes:

The Giant Sea Bass was completed on 11.01.09. This drawing is based upon photo studies I did of the animal that lives in the Steinhart Aquarium in the California Academy of Sciences. When I have a real passion and interest in an animal, as I do with the Giant Sea Bass, I feel I completely connect with the subject which usually results in a stronger image. I try with all my drawings for this connection with varying results.

Information about the Giant Sea Bass:

The Giant Sea Bass - also called the Black Sea Bass - is a large fish native to area of the northern Pacific Ocean.  They can reach sizes as large as 8 feet and weighing over 500 pounds. Due to overfishing the populations of Giant Sea Bass crashed in the 70s. Despite new protections put in place by the California State Department of Fish and Game the population has been slow to recover and the species is still considered critically endangered.
