The Gila Monster drawing line art version was completed in 2003 and the digital tinting added in 2007. The drawing is based on an image by the talented wildlife photographer Pete Carmichael. The drawing was touched up in 5.2009 and the color of the reptile changed to be more accurate.
The Gila Monster is a venomous lizard native to the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is the only venomous lizard native to the US and one of only two in the world. It is sluggish and slow-moving, and despite being poisonous it poses little threat to humans. It spend much of it's life underground and is not frequently encountered in the wild. They grow to about two feet long and weigh about 3 pounds.
