Artist's notes:

I illustrated a series of five beetles in 2005 and choose the Goliath Beetle as one of them. The stark black and white coloration is very impressive, which of course lends itself well to the medium of pen and ink. It also amazes me just how massive these beetles are, and yet still possess the ability to fly! I hope to see one of these beetles in the wild some day. The digital tinting was added to the original line art drawing sometime in 2007-08.

Information about the Goliath Beetle:

The Goliath Beetles are among the largest insects on Earth. They can be found in many of Africa's tropical forests, where they feed primarily on tree sap and fruit. Goliath beetles measure from 2 to 4-1/3 inches in length as adults, and can reach weights of 3-1/2 ounces. The adults are so large that when flying, they produce a sound akin to a toy helicopter in flight. These large insects are very popular in the pet trade.
