The Gopher Tortoise was completed in 2008. Is is based on a photo by a Flickr friend called 'lakegeorgevacations.' I think it is one of my strongest tortoise drawings, and is one of the last North American tortoises I have left to draw. Check out all the other tortoise drawings I've completed, and please feel free to make a suggestion if you don't see the one you're looking for.
The Gopher Tortoise is native to the coastal plains of the United States. They are medium-sized, with an average adult length of 10 inches and weight of 9 pounds. These tortoises dig burrows several feet deep into the ground. Gopher tortoises are herbivores. The bulk of their diet consists of grasses, such as wiregrass, but they also consume berries and other fruit. The Gopher Tortoise is the state reptile of Georgia.
