The Gray Fox drawing is based upon photos and sketches I did at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum in Walnut Creek. I had only ever seen a grey fox in captivity before this year. But I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one while staying in a cabin near Yosemite National Park. I'm sad to say this particular fox passed away from natural causes in 2010.
The Gray Fox is found in most areas of the southern half of North America down through Mexico and into northern parts of South America. Although in many areas it has been driven out by the Red Fox, which isn't native to the western part of the US but has expanded into the native areas of the gray fox. They gray fox is smaller than the red fox, however unlike the red fox, it readily climbs trees swiftly. The Grey Fox is omnivorous and will supplement it's diet of small mammals with fruits and vegetables.
