The Gray Hawk was completed on 2.17.2012. This marks the eighth hawk I've drawn. I had some problems with the digital tinting on this image, as I had purchased a new graphics tablet and had some problems getting adjusted to it. After struggling with the image for a few hours I replaced it with my old tablet and finished up the illustration. I had started with an excellent reference photo by Glenn Seplak so I think even with the problems I believe it turned out to be a fairly strong image.
Gray Hawk - also called the Gray-Lined Hawk - is a member of the raptor group of birds. Their range is from the southwestern United States down through Central America and into the countries of Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina, along with some islands in the Caribbean such as Trinidad. These birds of prey are on the smaller size 18–24 inches (46–61 centimeters) in length weighing about 16.8 ounces (475 grams) on average. The Gray Hawk is an effective hunter and will feed upon a variety of prey; lizards, snakes, small mammals, birds and amphibians. They generally sit high up on a perch and swoop down on their prey, but will also hunt from a low glide, just a few feet from the ground.
