The Great Blue Heron illustration was completed in (10/2008). I've been meaning to draw one of these gorgeous birds for many years. It took a little longer than I expected, an the lily pads on the water were a little more challenging then I expected. But overall I'm happy with the results. Whenever I draw an animal I always try to give a strong sense of it's three-dimensionality. I think that comes across fairly well here. This drawing is based on a photo by B. Irschick.
The Great Blue Heron is a wading shore bird in the family Ardeidae. This large bird is common over most of North and Central America as well as the West Indies and the Galápagos Islands. Great Blue Herons are found in a wide range of habitats. They live in fresh and saltwater marshes, flooded meadows, mangrove swamps, lake edges, or shorelines. Regardless, they always live near bodies of water and nest in the trees or bushes near the shore.
