The Great Egret was completed on 4.05.2010. I had considered drawing the Great Egret with wings folded perhaps standing on a stump or rock - as is the most commonly seen position of these birds. But they are so graceful and lovely in flight I had to render the subject that way. The drawing is based on a photo by Patty Bruno.
The Great Egret - also called the Great White or Common Egret - is a large shorebird of the family Ardeidae or herons and bitterns. It is a very widespread bird found in most tropical and warmer temperate regions of the world. They Great Egret is about 3 feet tall and weighs roughly 2 pounds. Like other members of it's family the Great Egret feeds in shallow waters or wet fields hunting for frogs, fish, invertebrates, small mammals and reptiles and even other birds.
