This was the first bird of prey that I drew and one of the first animals too. The original line art drawing was done in about 1998 and the color was added in 2007. Owls are one of my favorite subjects to draw. I've drawn a few but am always open to taking suggestions on new species I should consider.
The Great-Horned Owl is found in the forests of north and south America. They are large birds about 18 to 25 inches long and have a wingspan between 35-60 inches. The Great-Horned Owl is swift and graceful in flight, moving with stiff, steady wing beats, with wings held mostly below horizontal. In flight these owls can reach speeds up to 40 mph. The owl is primarily semi-nocturnal to nocturnal, but will occasionally hunt in the daytime. A Great Horned Owl may take prey 2 to 3 times heavier than itself.
