The Greater Angle Wing Katydid was completed on 1.29.2012. As I approach 700 total animal drawings, I start to notice there are several ubiquitous species I haven't gotten around to. The katydid is one of these. I've encountered them in nearly every place I've lived, and find them to be fascinating insects. The most impressive one I ever saw was in the rainforests of Costa Rica - a specimen that was at least 12 inches long! The drawing was based on a photo by Alice Abela
The Greater Angle Wing Katydid is a member of the family Tettigoniidae. This large group of insects includes many other species of katydid (Which are called bush crickets in the United Kingdom) Like other katydids, Microcentrum rhombifolium is an expect in camouflage. The coloration of the insect makes it very tricky to spot while it is prowling in the leaves. Usually these bugs are found a few feet off the ground and up towards the top or canopy of the tree. The range of the Greater Angle Wing Katydid is from South Dakota through the Great Lakes region, east to New Jersey, south to Florida and west to California.
