The Green Anole was completed on 5.26.2010. I recall seeing these handsome little lizards on Maui, and was surprised to learn they aren't native to the Hawaiian islands. But when I read that Hawaii indeed had no native reptiles or amphibians I wondered how they got there and established themselves. I also wondered what effect they had on the native animals, if any. Regardless, the Green Anole is a very common reptile in many parts of the US as well as being a popular aquarium pet, so I was very happy to draw one. The drawing is based on a photo by Frank Shufelt.
The Green Anole - or Carolina, red-throated or American Anole - is a small arboreal reptile native to the southeastern parts of the the United States. There are also several established populations on some of the Hawaiian Islands, where they are not native to. There is color variation in the species from a very deep and bright green to a dark brown. Occasionally a blue-green variant is seen as well. The anole feeds on a wide variety of insects and will generally feed on whatever it's able to fit into it's mouth. They are sometimes incorrectly referred to as chameleons.
