The Green Salamander was completed on 11.7.2011. This was drawn by a request of one of the subscribers to my Facebook Fan Page: Wildlife Art by Roger Hall Amphibians remain one of my favorite subjects to illustrate. I'm slowly working my way through the frogs, toads, salamanders and newts of North America. The drawing is based on a photo by the talented wildlife photographer Todd Pierson. You can see his images on Flickr here.
The Green Salamander is a a member of the family Plethodontidae, which are lungless salamanders that live in the natural areas, most commonly in very damp rocky areas or cliffs where little or no direct sunlight ever reaches. They have very specialized needs for their environment, and partly due to this they are classified as "Near Threatened" by conservation groups. Male Green Salamanders are very territorial, and will attack other salamanders or other animals that wander into it's territory, or when disturbed or threatened.
