The Harbor Porpoise was completed on 6.27.2010. I had been meaning to add a porpoise to the library of images for some time, but couldn't decide on a species. I decided to go with one of the more common ones, and one that is sometimes seen in the San Francisco Bay Area where I live. These marine mammals are such amazing looking animals - with that smirk on their faces they are a wonderful subject to draw.
The Harbor Porpoise is one of six species of porpoise. It is also one of the smallest marine mammals, growing to be about 4.5 - 6.5 feet long. As the name implies, this porpoise tends to stay in coastal areas or estuaries, although occasionally they venture up rivers and can be found hundreds of miles from the ocean. Harbor Porpoises feed on non-spiny fishes like herring, cod, whiting, squid, pollock, and sardines. They have been hunted for centuries, but the animal is not considered endangered - although it appears their overall numbers are declining.
