The Harris Hawk was completed on 10.3.09. I love the desert, and these handsome raptors are a favorite desert dweller of mine. Like all birds of prey, they have that sharp, alert and slightly dangerous look to them. Generally I like to draw birds with their wings spread out, but the Harris Hawk has such nice coloration on the tops of the wings I thought this pose was ideal. The drawing is based on a photo by A.J Haverkamp.
The Harris Hawk is a medium-large sized buteo found in semi-arid brush habitats from the southwestern US through Central America an into the drier area of South America. Unlike other raptors Harris Hawks will often remain with the family unit for a few years, helping to raise newborns and hunt cooperatively with other family members. This bird is very intelligent and can be trained, and because of this it is a very popular bird with falconers.
