The Hentz Striped Scorpion was completed on 2.20.2012. As the wildlife image library gets larger (the goal is 1,000 total illustrations) certain types of animals are sometimes considered "completed." As in I've drawn them a certain number of times and don't feel compelled to do another. This is the fifth scorpion I've drawn, and unless I'm commissioned to draw another species, I'll likely not revisit this subject - even though I love scorpions and they're pretty fun to draw. The illustration is based on a photo by Kenny Wren.
The Hentz Striped Scorpion - also called the Florida Striped Scorpion - is a member of the Buthidae family. It is one of three species of scorpions native to Florida. They are not large - only about 2-2.75 inches. They're usually found in dark spaces, like under rocks, in leaf litter and small crevices. They do get into houses where they are considered pests. The toxicity of this scorpion's venom is mild to moderate; on a scale from 1-5 (1 is mildly toxic venom and 5 being extremely toxic ) it is a 2.
