I did a series of five beetles in 2005. The line art version was completed that year, but the digital tinting wasn't added until 2008. When putting together this series, I tried to find the most interesting and beautiful of the order Coleoptera. I picked one to be the Hercules Beetle as it was one of the more well known of the rhinoceros beetles and the massive 'horn' was so distinctive.
The Hercules Beetle lives in the rainforests of South and Central America. It is one of the largest beetles on the earth. It is a 'scarab' beetle and noted for it's large horns. The Hercules Beetle is thought to be ones of the strongest animals on earth for it's size as it is able to carry eight-hundred and fifty times it's own body weight.
