The black and white inked version of the Horned Puffin was drawn in 2004. The digital color tinting was added in 2009. I love the postures of the birds in this image. Puffins are about the cutest birds around I think. I've also illustrated the Atlantic Puffin and will perhaps draw the Tufted Puffin.
The Horned Puffin is a pelagic seabirds of the family Alcidae. They are somewhat similar looking to penguins due to their coloration of black and white, but they are not closely related. Horned Puffins feed primarily on fish. They choose the rocky, isolated islands off the coast of Alaska, British Columbia and Siberia to breed, but spend much of the winter far out to sea. Rarely, some individuals will wander down the coast as far south as California. Because of it's colorful bill the Horned Puffin is occasionally called the 'sea parrot.' Like other puffins the Horned Puffins are excellent swimmers.
