The Hourglass Dolphin was completed on 7.22.2010. There are times when I'm simply taken by the striking beauty of an animal. Such was the case with the Hourglass Dolphin. I was looking through some images of these marine mammals, and came across one. I had never seen or heard of them before, but with their striking black and white coloration, I knew I had to draw one. I added this dolphin to a collection of animals I find to be as amazing as anything from another planet imagined by sci-fi writers. The drawing is based on a photo by Dolphinguy2004.
The Hourglass Dolphin is a small marine mammal of the Delphinidae Family. It inhabits Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters. And for that reason, this dolphin is actually rarely seen by humans, and wasn't discovered and identified until 1824. In that time only a few specimens have ever been examined. These dolphins tend to travel in smaller pods of 5-10 adults, feeding on small fish and squid. These cetaceans are often seen in the company of Fin Whales and as early whalers used them as indicators that larger whales were in the area.
