The Iberian Wolf was completed on 12.17.2011. This is the seventh sub-species of wolf I've completed. The coloration of these handsome animals was a real pleasure. The gray that blends into the red coloration took a lot of brush strokes, but I'm happy with the results. The drawing is based on a photo by Ulli Joerres
The Iberian Wolf is a sub-species of Gray Wolf native to the forests and open plains of northern Portugal northwestern Spain. It differs from the more common Eurasian Wolf by being thinner and having slightly different markings. The wolves live in small packs in the more remote areas of Iberian Peninsula, where they help to control the local populations of wild boar, deer and rabbit. They also feed on ibexes along with domestic animals like cow, sheep and goat (which often brings them into conflict with local farmers and shepherds) This species of wolf has come very close to extinction a few times, but conservation efforts and protection of the animal has resulted in the wolf expanding it's range.
