The Indian Rhinoceros was redone on 12/3/2008. The original was of a younger rhino and much of what makes this rhino distinctive was not evident in the sub-adult. This version looks more typical of your average Rhinoceros unicornis. The drawing is based on a photo by A.J. Haverkamp.
The Indian Rhinoceros - also called the Asian or Great One Horned Rhinoceros - is a large land mammal native to Nepal, Bhutan and areas of India. They are considered critically endangered, although their population numbers have climbed back from the low 100s back in the early 1900s due to overhunting. There is now believed to be over 2,000 in the wild currently. The name 'rhinoceros' comes from the Greek words - 'rhino' meaning nose and 'ceros' meaning horn.
