The Japanese Crane illustration was completed on 12/6/2008. I had been meaning to draw this remarkable bird for some time. The drawing is based on a photo by Hugh J McLaughlin. I think the grace and beauty of these remarkable birds is one of the true wonders of the natural world.
The Japanese Crane, also known as the Red-crowned Crane or Manchurian Crane is the second most rare crane in the world with an estimated population of around 1,500. This large bird's habitat is marshes and swamps, but can also be found in open farmland and rice field where is performs an amazing dance. The red 'crown' does not develop on the birds until it is fully mature. In Asia the crane is the symbol of luck and longevity.
