The Javan Rhinoceros was completed on 7.16.2010. This was the last of the extant rhinos left for me to draw. It was tricky, as there are very few photos in existence of this very rare a critically endangered animal, and as far as I can tell there are none, or very few, in any zoos in the world. I had to study the existing photos, and read up on the anatomy of the rhino. The finished drawing is pretty accurate, I would hope.
The Javan or Sunda Rhinoceros is one of only 5 extant species of rhinoceros. Of these this animal is thought to be the most rare. Once the most widespread of the Asian rhinos, hunting, wars and habitat loss have reduced their numbers to a handful, and only by extensive conservation efforts has the species been saved - at least temporarily - from extinction. There are no known species living in any of the world's zoos. These large land animals traditionally inhabited lowland rainforest, wet grasslands and flood plains.
