The Karner Blue Butterfly was commissioned by a private client who's sister successfully battled leukemia. The scientific name is 'Lycaeides melissa samuelis' which has the cancer survivor's name in it. This person also happens to be one of my best friends and a source of great inspiration to me and my artwork. The drawing is based on a photo by 'An Orchard Away.'
The Karner Blue Butterfly is a small blue endangered butterfly found in North America. It can be found in small areas of New Jersey, New York, New Hampshire and in areas of the Great Lakes. The butterfly's life cycle is dependent on the Wild Blue Lupine Flower. Each year there are two generations of Karner Blues; the first is in late May to mid June and the second is from mid-July to mid-August. It is the official state butterfly of New Hampshire.
