The Keel-Billed Toucan is another beautiful subject - it's kind of hard to go wrong here! I saw these amazing bird of the tropics in Costa Rica, and they had the more amazing way of 'dropping' through the trees from branch to branch, looking for food. Alas, as I watched the toucan found a meal - a baby bird! This drawing is based on a photo by Stephane Carret.
The Keel-Billed Toucan averages about 25 inches in length. They can be found from Southern Mexico to around Venezuela and Colombia. Toucans roost in the canopies of tropical, subtropical, and lowland rainforests. Their diet consists mostly of many different kinds of fruit, but may also include bird eggs, insects, lizards and frogs. When eating the fruit, Keel-billed Toucans will use their bill to pick the fruit, and then toss their heads back and swallow the fruit whole. This toucan is national bird of Belize.
