After years, and a few requests, I finally got around to illustrating this wonderful animal - the Killer Whale or Orca. I hope to one day kayak on Puget Sound and catch a glimpse of one. The inking took several hours, but the digital tinting took less time then I thought it would. I'm pleased to add it to my library.
The Killer Whale or Orca (also sometime called the Blackfish or Seawolf) is the largest species of the dolphin family. Despite it's common name it is not a whale. It is found throughout the planet's oceans, from the polar regions to warm tropical seas. This mammal is a formidable predator, hunting in groups or "pods" generally consisting of related individuals. They are considered the top predator in the world's oceans. They are very large animals with males typically ranging from 19-26 feet and weighing in excess of 6 tons. Females are generally smaller. Orcas are the official state marine mammal of Washington.
