This was the first beetle I drew. I've always been a fan of these guys and especially of ladybugs. This was also the smallest subject I had ever drawn, and in fact I actually went out into the backyard and looked for one for reference (something that's harder to do when I'm drawing a large African predator) but the North American ones don't seem to have the same amount of white in the front of the shell as Harmonia axyridis does - which is the Japanese or Asian Ladybug.
The Asian Ladybug is a coccinellid beetle native to east Asia but it has been widely introduced in Europe and Asia to help control aphids and other pests. But it is now very common in those areas and is considered an invasive species. The species can often be difficult to identify because of the large variation in the color and pattern of the shell.
