The Largemouth Bass was completed on 8.11.2011. I had considered drawing some sports fish, but I guess I felt it was a little cliché and had already been down over and over by artists more talented than me. But after completing a Brook Trout I decided I'd like to do a series of the more popular sports fish. I haven't decided on the next species, but if you'd like to suggest a sport fish to draw please shoot me an email.
The Largemouth Bass is a member of the sunfish family. It is a species of Black Bass native to the freshwater stream, ponds, lakes and slow moving rivers of North America. The sports fish has many other names such as widemouth bass, bucketmouth, green bass, black bass and Florida's Bass. It is the largest of the black basses, with the average size being about 18 inches with a weight between 3-10 pounds, although they can get as large as 25 inches long. It is a very popular sports fish, and because of this it has been introduced into many areas where the local ecosystem cannot handle it, and with few natural predators it causes decline of the local fish. Adult Largemouth Bass feed on smaller fish, crustaceans, frogs, snakes, salamanders and even small birds and baby alligators. Because of it's large mouth, it can take prey that can be nearly 1/3 of the fish's total body length. It is the official state fish of Alabama.
