The Lazuli Bunting was completed on 6.11.09. Songbirds are a favorite subject. The color blue is fairly rare in the other animal orders - so it's nice that it occurs so often in birds. The drawing is based on a photo by Ron Wolf.
The Lazuli Bunting is a small sized songbird found in much of the western parts of North America. They prefer shrubby areas, chaparral, wooded valleys and open grassy areas and urban areas. They're named after the deep blue gem of the same name. They are sometimes mistaken for bluebirds. They feed on seeds, fruits and insects, but will also happily visit birdfeeders. These birds are plentiful and their numbers appear stable.
