The Leopard Ray was completed on 2.10.2012. Often I strongly consider the commercial applications of creating a drawing; how popular/relevant an animal might be. Then there are times when I am so captured by the sheer beauty of an animal's appearance, I don't care whatsoever if I sell a single drawing. This was the case of the Leopard Ray. What an amazing looking fish! It was a lot of fun to draw as well.
The Leopard Ray - also called the Leopard Whipray - is a member of the family of Dasyatidae. Apart from where these rays live, which is the warm tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, from South Africa to Australia, little is know of this species. They are a large species of ray, reaching about 4.5 feet (1.4 meters) across and nearly 13 feet long (4.1 meters) It is believed to feed on small crustaceans and fish, as is the case with other species of ray. Because so little is known of this animal, environmental groups are unsure of the status in regards to it's conservation.
