The Eastern Lubber Grasshopper was completed on 7.30.09. This was the first grasshopper I've drawn. The Lubber's colors are really remarkable, and looking at the insect I felt confident it would make a great drawing. I'm satisfied with the results. The illustrations is based on a photo by Tansy Jefferies.
The Eastern Lubber Grasshopper, is an insect native to the southeastern and south central areas of the US from eastern Texas to areas of North Carolina. It is found all throughout Florida. It is a large grasshopper reaching almost 3 inches long. The Lubber is incapable of flight and must move around through a series of hops. The coloration varies depending on the insect's range. These grasshoppers prefer open pine woods, overgrown fields and low grassy areas near roadways. When threatened the Lubber will emit a foul smelling spray from it's thorax along with a hissing sound.
