The Malayan Tapir was completed on 6/23/2009. Generally, I only show the animal by itself, without offspring. But the patterns on the young Malayan Tapir were so interesting, along with the fact they always seen in the company of a parent made me decide to go with the both animals in the illustration. The drawing is based on a photo by A.J. Haverkamp.
The Malayan Tapir - also called the Asian Tapir - is the largest of the four extant species of Tapir. The Tapirs habitat is the tropical lowland rainforests of Southeast Asia. Their diet includes grasses, aquatic plants, leaves, soft twigs and fruits of low-growing shrubs, which it tugs with its nostrils that it uses like fingers. Like many other animals of the rainforest, their numbers are in decline due to habitat loss and poaching. Despite protection and attempts to stem hunting, the Malayan Tapir conservation status is considered endangered and it's future is uncertain.
