The Maned Wolf was completed on 9.10.10. I first saw these incredible looking canids at the Wildlife World Zoo in Arizona. Not surprisingly, I came to the conclusion as other do, that these mammals looked like wolves on stilts! I added this endangered animal to a collection of animals I find to be as amazing as anything from another planet imagined by sci-fi writers.
The Maned wolf is the largest member of the family Canidae found in South America. They are not closely related to any other living canid, and are not technically a wolf. Neither are ey a fox, jackal, coyote or dog. Their habitat includes semi-open grassy areas with scattered trees and bushes. Unlike other wolves, Maned Wolfs do not form packs, and they generally hunt alone. They feed on small mammals, lizards, birds and fish. But nearly half of it's diet comes from vegetable matter such as sugarcane, fruit and tubers.
