Manta Rays, and rays in general, are some of my favorite ocean animals. I've never seen a manta in the wild, but have seen bat rays and eagle rays while snorkeling. The manta illustration took about 4 days to complete, due to the fact that there were large areas of black that needed to be stippled.
Manta Rays can be found in tropical and warm temperate coastal regions of the world's oceans. Mantas stay near the surface of the ocean down to depths of 400 feet. Manta Rays stay closer to shore in the warmer waters where food sources are more abundant. Males grow to a disc width of and about 13—15 feet with females slightly larger at about 16—18 feet.
