The Marbled Salamander was completed on 3.9.11. This image was something of a experimental piece, as rather than draw several square inches of black (which, dot by dot, takes a very long time) I replicated the pattern using Photoshop. Although it ended up being probably only about 50% of the total area. Doing this probably saved me at least 1-2 hours. The drawing is based on a photo by Todd Pierson.
The Marbled Salamander is a species of mole salamander native to the damp woodlands, marshes, swamps and bogs of the eastern United States. They can be found in southern New England to northern Florida, and west to Illinois and Texas. These amphibians live in the damp leaf litter of the forest floor. They generally do not go into the water except to breed. The adult salamanders feed on small mollusks like worms, slugs, insects, centipedes and other small invertebrates. Marbled salamanders make good pets, and are other kept in captivity.
