The Moon Jellyfish was completed on 11.20.2011. Mostly translucent animal, such as jellyfish, can be pretty tricky to render, when the foundation of the drawing is black ink. Usually, I have to get a little creative and make a somewhat unreal image. Although the illustration is still scientifically accurate. One method to make an underwater animal pop a little bit off the page is to give it a slight luminescence, such as this jelly has. The drawing is based on a photo by Charlene-SJ.
The Moon Jellyfish - also called the Moon Jelly, Saucer Jelly or Common Jellyfish - refers to a group of about ten species of jellyfish which are so similar in appearance as to be nearly impossible to tell apart without the aid of of genetic sampling. This genus is found in most of the world's oceans, from the tropics to as far north as latitude 70°N and as far south as 40°S. Like other jellies, Aurelia aurita feeds on plankton that they catch in their long tendrils as the jellyfish drifts on the sea currents. They are predated upon by just a few animals, such as the Mola Mola or Ocean Sunfish and the Leatherback Sea Turtle.
