The Mountain Lion is a 're-do' from an earlier drawing. This illustration is based on a photo by C. Palmer who I believe took the photo at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. I love these big cats, and have only ever encountered one in my hikes. The encounter was brief, but it gave me even a larger respect for these formidable predators.
The Mountain Lion, also called puma, cougar, or panther - depending on region - is a mammal of the Felidae family, Native to the Americas. This large, solitary cat has the greatest range of any wild terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere. An adaptable, generalist species, the cougar is found in every major New World habitat type. While not generally a threat to human, due to encroachment on their land and habitat destruction, violent encounters do occasionally happen with these big cats, although the cougar, rather than the human, is the one who is eventually killed.
