The Mountain Tapir was completed in November 2014. This is the last of the extant species of tapir I had to draw. I was going over some old photos, and found a decent image that I realized I could use as the basis for a drawing (shadows all but ruined the image but the pose of the animal worked, and I could simply eliminate the shadows in the drawing.
The Mountain Tapir - also called the Woolly Tapir - is the second smallest of the five species of tapir (only the recently described Tapirus kabomani being smaller but there is no consensus that this is a new species) It is the only tapir that doesn't live in tropical rainforests. It is most easily distinguished from other tapirs by its thick woolly coat and white lips. The species name comes from the term "La Pinchaque", an imaginary beast said to inhabit the same regions as the mountain tapir
