The Musk Ox was completed on 3.16.2010. These impressive animals have always fascinated me. I first saw them as a child in the Northern Trek area of the Minnesota Zoo. Rendering the dark fur was, as it always is, a big challenge for me. The drawing is based on a photo by Bob Tilley.
The Musk Ox is part of the Bovidae family that is native to the arctic regions of North America and Greenland. It has been successfully re-introduced into areas of Alaska, where the population was wiped out during the last 19th century. They are large animals, standing 3-4 feet tall and weighing up to 700 pounds. Musk Ox are social and tend to live in large herds of roughly 10-20 individuals, but in larger herds that number can be as high as 70. Musk Oxen can be domesticated, and the yarn from their wool is very desirable, as well as their meat and milk.
