Information about the Nine-Banded Armadillo:The Nine-Banded Armadillo is a small mammal indigenous to areas in North, South and Central America making it one of the most widespread of the armadillo family. It's mostly active at night and is generally solitary. This armadillo can be found in a wide range of habitats including rainforest, grasslands and dry scrub. The name comes from a Spanish word which refers to it's armor-like covering. If startled the armadillo can jump three feet straight up in the air. These mammals are insectivorous feeding mainly on ants, termites and other small invertebrates. Unlike many animals the Nine-Banded Armadillo's range is expanding and they are expected to continue to move north and east up from their current range of the southeastern part of the US. The Nine-banded armadillo was named the state mammal of Texas in 1995. | Description: Fine art illustration of a Nine-Banded Armadillo.
