The North China Leopard was completed on 8.27.2014. Slowly but surely going through the many sub-species of leopard, and I should have them all completed in a few years. I found a great reference photo by my Flickr friend Joachim Mueller who kindly allowed me to use it reference to make this drawing. I changed some of the background elements here, using bamboo and a dark green wash in the background to give the drawing more depth. This image will be part of a collage of endangered animals native to China.
The North China Leopard is large predatory feline native to the These leopards live in northern China Approximately 2500 remain in the wild in highly fragmented ranges, with another 100 or so in captivity. The range of this leopard was once a large area of Central and Northern China. They feed on wild boar, deer, birds, rodents and even larger insects. Like many other leopard species, they are mostly solitary except when mating. While the North China Leopard is not yet critically endangered, due to habitat loss and illegal poaching it will likely be moved into that category soon. There is also a problem with genetic diversity in the captive species which further threatens the species.
