The Northern Copperhead Snake was completed on 10.15.10. A few requests had come in from people asking me to render this impressive looking snake. As always with snakes, I faced the challenge of drawing up the scales, and making sure they were symmetrical and helped define the contours of the body. The drawing is based on a photo by Andrew Hoffman.
The Northern Copperhead Snake - also called the copperhead moccasin - is a short, heavy-bodied venomous reptile of the viper family. It is native to eastern parts of the United States. They are not generally dangerous and encounters usually with the snake end with viper retreating. The color and patterns of the copperhead tend to resemble the leaves, sticks, and other plant materials on the forest floor. As these snakes feed on rodents such as rats, copperheads are very beneficial animals.
