The Northern Flicker was completed on 1.07.11. From the northern forests of the Mid-West to the coastal redwoods of California, I've lived my whole lives seeing these birds. I thought about drawing one in flight (which I may do with another similar species later) but when I saw an image of the Flicker looking smartly over it's shoulder like this, I figured it would make an excellent illustration. The drawing is based on a photo by Ron Wolf.
The Northern Flicker is a medium sized New World woodpecker. It's native to the much of North and Central America, Cuba and the Cayman Islands. They have a very distinctive call, which have resulted in there being 100 or so names and nick-names for the bird. Northern Flickers feed on plant matter such as berries, fruits, seeds and nuts. But their primary food source are small invertebrates and insects. There are 5 subspecies of Northern Flicker with the most common being the Yellow-shafted Flicker and the Red-shafted Flicker.
