The Northern Pintail Duck was completed on 10/21/2010. Ducks are great subjects, as most birds are. It's always a question on how best to show them - in flight, on the water or waddling along the shoreline. With the Northern Pintail, I decided on the shoreline shot. The drawing is based on a photo by Nancy J. Wagner
The Northern Pintail duck is a large large duck of the family Anatidae. These birds have an elegant appearance on water and in flight, and can be found in Europe, Asia and North America. They have a very large migratory area, wintering near the equator across the globe. These ducks are so name for the long, tapering tail that comes to a point or 'pin.' Also distinctive is the light blue colored bill. The Pintail feeds by dabbling and upending in shallow water for plant food mainly in the evening or at night, and therefore spends much of the day resting. They will also feed on small invertebrates and crustaceans during the breeding season.
