The Northern Red-Legged Frog was completed on 11/17/2009. Frogs remain one of my favorite subjects. Something about these amphibians make the artistic process (ink drawings then digitally tinted) really conducive to the illustration. I've seen these frogs in Oregon and Northern California and really like their coloring. The drawing is based on a photo by Mark Leppin.
The Northern Red-Legged frog is an amphibian native to the coastal regions of western North America from British Columbia down to Northern California. They are 'true frogs.' Red-Legged frogs need ponds, marshes or stream pools for breeding. They are rarely found far from water and generally are most comfortable in the water. When threatened these frogs will dive deep in the water to avoid danger. Like most frogs they're opportunistic hunters feeding on insects, snails, worms, tadpoles, small fish and even other species of frogs.
