The line art version of the Okapi was drawn in 2004 and the color added in 2007. These animals are a favorite of mine, as they look to me to be a combination of a zebra and a giraffe. One day, while chatting about the different animals I had drawn, a close friend tried to 'stump' me saying I should draw an Okapi. I was happy to tell him I already had.
Okapi are found only in the tropical forests of northeastern Zaire. They live in the dense rainforests at middle elevations within their range. They frequent river banks and stream beds. The Okapi has a form superficially resembling that of a horse. Average body length is 6-7 feet with the height at the shoulder 5 feet and weighing about 450-550 pounds. The Okapi is the only living relative of the giraffe and was one of the last large mammals to be discovered in Africa in 1902.
