The Ornate Chorus Frog was completed on 10.15.2011. I am getting close - perhaps about 2/3rd the way - of all North American treefrog species. Each of these charming little amphibians have been fun to draw. They might not be as flashy or colorful as the frogs in the tropical rainforest, but they have their own charming color palettes (usually greens, yellows and browns) that make them every bit as gorgeous. The drawing is based on a photo by the talented herpetologist and photographer Pierson Hill.
The Ornate Chorus Frog is a small (1-1 7/16" or 2.5-3.7 cm) arboreal amphibian native to the southern coastal plains, cypress ponds, flooded meadows and flatwood ditches of North Carolina to eastern Louisiana and south throughout much of northern Florida. They are members of the Family Hylidae, which encompasses a wide-ranging species of frogs, including many other treefrogs. They are mostly nocturnal and are rarely seen during the day. Their shrill mating call is reminiscent of an insect.
