I did a rough sketch of this image in 2004, but didn't work up a formal drawing until 2008 when I got formal permission from the photographer Dick Bartlett, who is a very talented herp photographer.
Ornate Diamondback Terrapins are a medium sized turtle native to brackish coastal swamps of the eastern and southern US. It ranges from Massachusetts to Florida. This turtle gets it's name from the intricate diamond pattern on the top of it's shell. It is a carnivore, feeding mainly on mollusks, crabs and small fish. The terrapin can crush tough shells due to the bony plates they have on their upper and lower mandibles.
